How to Just Do it!

I’ve always thought of myself as a spur of the moment kind of a person.

When I was in college, in New York, I remember talking about a favorite muffin place in Boston.  Next thing, I was driving to Boston with my roommate to get a muffin.  It was a four-hour road trip.  It seemed like nothing, not even a bit foolish, to drive out of state for muffins.

Last week, I had a similar adventure.  It didn’t involve muffins, but a flight to Colorado.

For the past eight years, the first of February, my daughter and I have made it a tradition to celebrate my late husband’s (her dad) passing.  We call it his heaven birthday.  We make it a special time of being together, usually involving a weekend adventure someplace out of the ordinary.  We’ve gone to a Culinary Spa in Vermont, an adventure Spa in St. George Utah, a weekend In Ireland and last year a dog-sled ride in Leadville Colorado, just to name a few.

This year, nothing was planned.  Talking on the phone to her, (she now lives in Colorado Springs) the day before the anniversary, we were both lamenting we would each probably just go to a movie alone to commemorate the heaven birthday.   That’s when my spur of the moment DNA sprang into action.  “Let’s see if there are any cheap flights, I’ll come visit you.”  There were, so the next afternoon I was on my way to Colorado. No solo movies for us!

Sometimes, all it takes is the decision to do something out of the ordinary, and doing it.  I won’t drive 4 hours for muffins anymore, but there are times when stepping outside the box of ‘ordinary’ is the thing to do.  It might take some scrambling to tie up loose ends, but even if you forget a few ends and they’re left hanging, do it.

I realized this visit to see my daughter, might be the last time I get to visit her, before she becomes Mrs. Jarvie this May.  We had a wonderful time trying on $800 wedding shoes (didn’t get them!) and eating lots of great food.  Memories made, just need to be made.  I’m so glad I didn’t stay home for a solo movie night!

I’m encouraging you to jump at the chance to do something out of the ordinary once and a while.

It’s refreshing to the spirit and soul.
