I woke the other morning with the weirdest thought filling my head.
I don’t know if this phrase actually woke me up or if it was just the first thing that popped into my mind, but I heard, “Mind the Gap.” It was not part of a dream, just a thought that filled my head.
The back-story on the warning comes from my trip to London a few weeks ago. Riding on the “tube” which is their subway, the running announcement at every stop was to notice the space between the train doorway and the platform. Looking down, there actually was a gap that could easily take a shoe, thus the alert to, “mind the gap” and be aware of the potential hazard.
I didn’t want to miss the meaning.
I didn't want to miss the reason the sentence was in my head when I opened my eyes, so I laid in bed wondering what it could mean for me.
There are quite a few “gaps” we must watch out for in our days. Things both small and devastating create a space between what we hope for and what life brings us. How we “mind” the gap that separates the two says something about how we live our life. Sometimes the space can be a pit big enough to swallow us, other times all we need to do is know the gap is there and make sure to step over it. I have had both size gaps this year.
As we turn the corner into this next year, let’s not be afraid to “get on the train” and “mind the gap”. We can celebrate the journey and enjoy where our destiny takes us.
