The Hidden Paradise of Waiting rooms

Waiting gives time to Knit

Waiting gives time to Knit

I find myself this morning in a knitter's paradise, a doctor's waiting room.

I'm parked in a nice corner, back row armchair next to an end table.  The light is good.  I've filled out the necessary paperwork and anticipate a long lovely time of waiting for my make to be called.  I've brought a soft merino wrap to work on and have settled in nicely.

I feel for those who have come unprepared.  The magazine selection is fairly lame, how many people in a glaucoma specialist's office need to read last year's copy of Family Fun?  I'm the youngest in the room. I can knit my heart out here.

Knitter's are Prepared for the Wait.

I find calm and relax in the wait, because I knit.  No one seems to notice me and I'm fine with that (it is a glaucoma office.)  It can become annoying if a knitting-watcher becomes too chatty when I'm trying to count yarn-over's.

I'm reminded of the time I was in the same situation accompanying my friend to a Dr.'s office visit.  We got comfortable, much as I did today, remarking to each other how we liked the office redecorating choices.  Everything was going well, as we chatted softly, knitting needles clicking away.  That is until the nurse poked her head around the corner and informed us we were at the wrong doctor's office.  Embarrassingly we packed up and headed down the hallway.

That is when I got the idea. I could hire myself out as a professional "waiter."  I could plant myself in offices, at meetings, in lobbies, anywhere it looks good to have people in the room.  I could sit with sleeping hospital patients, nursing home residents, board meetings and all places where uninterrupted knitting could occur!

I might be onto something, but for now I'll be satisfied to fill the seats in my own life with knitting time.  I hope you will too!

Knitting time is paradise.
